The Utah Republican Party’s quarterly meeting on Saturday, June 27th was a great success. After much preparation, the Party came together and approved the necessary changes to its governing documents in order to be compliant with SB 54.

These changes were passed after lengthy and in-depth discussion to ensure they were in the best interest of the Party. The meeting actually went into Executive Session for roughly an hour and a half where members had the opportunity to ask more detailed questions of the Party’s legal counsel. It is now up to the delegates to confirm these changes at our State Organizing Convention on August 15th. Delegates will have the opportunity to study the proposals and adopt these necessary changes that will allow us to submit the letter to the Lieutenant Governor’s stating our intent to become a Qualified Political Party (QPP).

Governor Gary Herbert was in attendance and discussed his recent experience as part of the 2015 Trade Mission to Western Europe. Governor Herbert also highlighted the deliberative process that took place during the meeting as a great example of “Utah Republicans coming together.”

Congressman Rob Bishop also attended the meeting and voted on all of the proposed changes to the Party’s governing documents.

Morgan County GOP Chair Kera Birkland was elected by acclamation as the Executive Committee member from Congressional District 1. Congratulations Kera!

Lowell Nelson proposed a resolution to nullify federal overreach on issues including marriage, property, and healthcare.105 members were credentialed and the meeting adjourned at approximately 3 PM.
