Utah Republican Party Announces Final Presidential Preference Poll Results

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – On March 13th, 2024, the Utah Republican Party announced final presidential preference results with 100% of precincts reporting. 

UTGOP Chairman Robert Axson released the following statement regarding the results: “The Utah Republican Party congratulates President Trump on his strong performance in Utah—and across the nation—to secure his path to becoming our Party’s nominee.  While the vote to finalize his nomination won’t happen until the National Delegates meet in July, it is important that voters everywhere unify to ensure that the Biden administration is stopped. The constant turmoil, lawlessness, and unaffordability that Joe Biden has fostered is a disservice to every American.” 

Final Results   

The allocation of national delegates is based on a formula outlined in our bylaws. Any candidate that receives over 50% of the vote gets all of Utah’s 40 delegates. If no candidate receives 50% of the vote, delegates are allocated proportionally, except that a candidate must receive at least 15% of the vote to receive any delegates. As a result, Donald Trump will receive all of Utah’s 40 national delegates. 

According to the rules of the Republican National Committee, state parties hold either a caucus or primary in order to identify the preference of their Republican voters for a presidential nominee. These results instruct the national delegates allocated from that state on how to vote in the first round of balloting at the Republican National Convention. Similar to how the President is elected by the Electoral College and is not chosen directly by the popular vote, the nomination of a Republican presidential candidate through a preference poll or primary is informative to the national delegates but does not choose the nominee directly. 

Utah’s national delegates and alternate national delegates will be chosen at the state’s Nominating Convention on April 27, 2024. Instructions on how to file as a national delegate, alternate national delegate, and presidential elector can be found here. 

As in every state, the Party Chair, National Committeeman and National Committeewoman are automatic national delegates. Therefore, Utah will elect 37 national delegates and 37 alternate national delegates, of which 25 will be at-large, and 12 will be equally distributed between the state’s four Congressional Districts.
